Renovare was founded by Richard J. Foster in 1988.

Ten years previously he had published Celebration of Discipline, which led to a widespread ministry of speaking and teaching on spiritual formation. He began to explore how a more systematic renewal movement might be formed. This led to the foundation of Renovare in November 1988.

Since then, local expressions of Renovare have sprung up around the world, each developing their own appropriate style.

Renovaré Britain and Ireland was established in 2001. In Britain and Ireland, the first Chair was James Catford, Group Chief Executive of Bible Society. In 2011 Joe Davis was appointed as Renovare UK’s first Advocate and Speaker Among the new initiatives developed in the UK is the Life Streams booklet, the UK edition of the original Spiritual Formation Workbook.
